A long tradition in Spain and Andalusia
Holy Week is celebrated throughout Spain, but it is in the cities of Andalusia and Seville in particular that it has been in full swing since the 16th century. In fact, this traditional festival is one of the oldest and most famous in the region and the country. So popular and deeply rooted that in 1980, Spain recognised Semana Santa as a festival of international tourist interest.
This tradition transforms towns and villages into living scenes of devotion and art. It's a time in Spain when religious fervour and culture come together to immerse you in the heart of Iberian culture.
Every year, many national and international tourists take advantage of the Easter holidays to come and stay in Seville. Whether they are believers or not, all visitors are immersed in tradition as they fervently follow the pasos (altars carried by men) of the various cofrades (brotherhoods).
A week marked by processions
The processions march through the streets to the rhythm of drums and saetas, moving songs. Each step of the penitents and the route of the pasos tell stories of faith and tradition.
From Seville to Granada, from Malaga to Cordoba, Spain's Holy Week is lived out with intensity, between respectful silence and applause. It's an invitation to discover Spain in a different light, through its rituals and its history. But what's most impressive is its ability to bring people from all walks of life together around the same emotion.

HOLY WEEK IN MALAGA
One of our favourites during Holy Week in Spain is the Semana Santa in Malaga. It's a vibrant spectacle of faith and tradition, where everyone passionately celebrates the holy days. The streets of Malaga come alive to the sound of bandas and are filled with the fragrance of incense. The majestic thrones bearing the images of Christ and the Virgin Mary pass before your eyes throughout the city.
One of the highlights is the El Cautivo procession, which attracts thousands of worshippers on Holy Monday.
The Royal Confraternity of Hope offers a striking image with its verdant throne carried by hundreds of bearers. The fervent participation of the Malagueños in their traditional tunics makes Holy Week a spectacular experience. An event combining devotion, art and culture that you won't forget!
